February 27, 2012  |  Blog, shows, Uncategorized  |  Share

I will be performing on Sirius radio again tomorrow (Tuesday) morning on Sway’s show on Shade 45 (I think at 10 or 11 AM) with Ski Beatz doing some live arrangements of our latest album release “Twilight” you can download here. I Played on this album in entirety. Tune in tomorrow.

In other news I have been touring a lot with Talib Kweli and Res’s group Idle Warship. I will be performing with them and Talib’s solo stuff at South By South West this year. More details coming soon. I also recently started recording my solo album at Redford Reid studios.

Jean Grae “Cake or Death” First Single

January 3, 2012  |  Blog, shows, songs  |  Share

So a while back Jean asked me to do an “all bass” composition for her album. Of course I jumped on the opportunity, although I’ll admit it took a minute for me to figure out exactly what to do… What I made ended up being the intro to her first single off her next album Cake or Death, the track is called “U&Me&Everyone We Know.” What I did basically was use some melody and structure from the M-Phazes beat and created a whole new thing using only bass, overdubbing over myself several times, panning, and adding effects. After I sent to Jean Grae she had her homie record a really dope trumpet composition over mine and Jean edited it all together. You can listen to it here:

The Album is slated to come out sometime this Spring.

I have a lot of shows coming up this month around the country with Idle Warship, Olamide Faison, and more. The upcoming shows section to the right of my page will keep you posted. Oh and Happy New Year! Work every day to make this one great.

PEACE!

New Single By Stalley Off Upcoming Ski Beatz album “Twilight Zone”

Ski Beatz feat. Stalley-Gentleman’s Quarterly from DD172 on Vimeo.

New video from Stalley, one of my favorite artists coming up right now and good friend. This dude is true talent.
The album by Ski Beatz “Twilight Zone” has been pretty hush until now. I played bass on all of it and help write a lot of the music. I can’t divulge the artists on it yet but all I can say is it is going to be big. I am really proud of the music, definitely some of the best work we have done. Will keep you posted on release date soon as I get confirmation.

Finally off tour back in NYC hustling as always. Since returning home I have been working non stop on various recording projects and doing a shows all over. Did a track for Talib Kweli’s next album yesterday, working with Ski Beatz on different stuff ie. Dynasty Electric and Jim Jones. Also performing live with Idle Warship, Talib Kweli and Res’s band featuring some of my favorite musicians to play with: Daru Jones, Yuki Hirano, and John Cave. Band is sounding out of control. Rocking Southpaw tonight with that lineup.

On another note, my brother Olamide Faison released his first solo album on Tuesday. It is a live album recorded at the Bitter End in NYC featuring myself on bass, Bert Price on keys, and Jamal Hampton on drums. The Bitter End is like our second home. We play there almost every Tuesday, when we are around of course.

We have physical copies available in person and should have them up online for delivery soon. By the end of the day you will be able to download the album at the store section here.

I am real proud of this recording. Please support real artistry by buying it. PEACE!

Pilot Talk 2 Bass

November 8, 2011  |  Blog, songs, video  |  Share

Here are descriptions of some of my favorite bass lines I did for Curren$y’s Pilot Talk 2

Airborne Aquarium.

I recorded this line at the dojo when we used to have the studio in the basement. Ski had the beat ready but was pretty much bare, just the synth and drums so I knew I had to fill it up with some funk and more melodic content. The whole song is just G-7 to EbMaj7 but I played through the whole thing using a good deal of variation. I also took into account his lyrics, kind of dancing between his words rhythmically at points. If I remember correctly I did two takes and took the second. On my fretless Modulus Quantum 5 String (as always).

Real Estates.

This was recorded after we moved upstairs at the dojo. The song has pretty interesting chord changes, which is characteristic of Ski Beatz and Curren$y. This line I actually thought about for a while and really constructed rather than freestyle. When the song resolves to A major near the end of the vamp I arpeggiate the chord in a weird rhythm and fashion. The rhythm for that line is actually from a Jay Z verse. I often use rap phrasing in my solos and basslines (no longer a secret). Next time you solo try to rap a verse in your head that you know well (for example Big L “Platinum Plus”) and translate the words to notes under your fingers. Definitely takes practice but will open up dope ideas…

Montreux.

This one was pretty straightforward. Mainly just layin it down funk groove kinda thing. But real fresh beat.

Michael Knight.

I recorded this song in the basement studio at the dojo. We didn’t expect it to be a single at all really. The chord changes are pretty weird, but once Curren$y got on it it definitely transformed. My homie John Cave came up with the initial guitar part and melody. Me and him are really into African music, thats actually how we met. A main characteristic of African music is call and response which we definitely used here. John occupies the first two beats of each bar then I come in the second two with a line that really reenforces the minor 9 quality of the chords.

Aguilar Bass Amps

September 23, 2011  |  Blog, shows  |  Share

I am honored to now be officially endorsed by Aguilar Amplification. I will be using the Tone Hammer 500 on my 51 City US Tour “The Hip-Hop and Love Tour” starting this Tuesday September 27 In Tempe, Arizona. My group Ski Beatz and the Senseis will be backing up MURS, Tabi Bonney, Da$h, Locksmith, Mckenzie Eddy, Sean O’Connell and many special guests depending on what city we’re in. The Tone Hammer is super lightweight (4 lbs.) and sounds crazy. This is great for when I’m running around NYC gigging and doing sessions. Feels great to be an Aguilar artist, has been a dream of mine since I was a teenager. Be sure to check the tour website for the dates.

Olamide Faison

Heres a video of two songs by Olamide, the second one a duet performance with myself at the Highline Ballroom in NYC.  Olamide and I have been working together for a couple years now.  We have held down a residency on and off at the legendary Bitter End in the East Village for a while now.  This Tuesday September 20th and 10:30 PM will be the last performance from us there until I get off tour (well he’ll still be performing just not with me until I’m back). Don’t miss it. Olamide is one of the best up and coming artists in NYC.  Also look out for our live album dropping soon.

You can listen to more of his music here:
